We probably should have slept, but after consulting with Montow and the others, we again visited Yalini. She was awake and alert, and so were a trio of elder Cavots. They seemed prepared to travel.

“If you’re ready for the great negotiation, we believe that we can find an appropriate portal,” said a gray-faced Cavot with rams horns that curved back majestically. The fur on his chest was black, white, and gray and almost looked like a houndstooth suit. Almost.

“You can call me Charlie, though that is not my actual name. Yalini tells me this is a fine name that is easy for your kind to pronounce,” he said.

“Good to meet you, Charlie,” I said, realizing too late that I had stepped forward to shake hands. He did a little tap dance, and I thought we were both amused.

“This is Amanda and Jack,” he said, introducing the other two Cavots. “Take us to your leviathans, and we will help you find a demon to negotiate with.”

Wozim and Solen looked at me with confused expressions.

I faced Charlie. “Are we able to take the ships?”

“No, of course not. But I would like to see one in person. It will give me energy. Is that the right term? Regardless, we should go to the lagoon now.”

“You got it,” I said, and we headed out in the morning light. Surprisingly, I didn’t feel tired, though I knew I should. Maybe I’d been resting more than I realized during my forced sabbatical among the Taliz. Living in their village required me to do my share of chores, but I also went to bed pretty early and took naps by the sea when I felt like it.

And I was leaving all of this? The thought made me smile. My friends did not notice. They were lost in their thoughts.

Once we arrived at the lagoon and the Cavots had their fill of dancing around our ships, they began setting up their portals near the shoreline. Solen joined me to watch them.

“This almost seems too easy,” she said. “I feel great. The Cavots seemed not only helpful but also knowledgeable. I think we’ll be done negotiating with demons by the end of the day, and there will be peace like never before. When have we ever been that lucky?”

Yalini approached us before I could answer and pressed her hands together in front of her chest. All three of her eyes regarded us, which wasn’t as distracting as I would’ve thought a couple of years ago. “The first part is ready, and I suggest that the most important person in your delegation goes first. I cannot promise there will be no danger on the other side, but the Cavot methods of traversing the galaxy have been refined for many years, and they strive diligently to avoid stepping into danger. You should know that these are the best portal artists of their kind. I am still uncertain, but perhaps it will work for each of you.”

Wozim seemed somewhat surprised but stepped forward.
